MIRI: A man in his 50s was killed after the car he was driving skidded off the road and crashed into a lamp post along the Kuala Baram Bypass here on Tuesday evening, police said.
The fatal crash happened at about 5.50 pm near the Industrial Training Institute here.
According to Miri district police chief, Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, the victim was a local man believed to be in his 50s who had been driving from Senadin towards Permyjaya.
“Preliminary investigations found that the car lost control before veering off the road and crashing into a lamp post on the right side of the carriageway,” he said in a statement.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not immediately release the victim’s identity pending notification of his next of kin.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to contact traffic investigating officer, Mohd Faizul Ab. Rahim, at 014-8582582 or 085-430479, or to get in touch with the nearest police station.
Police also reminded motorists to drive responsibly and observe traffic regulations at all times to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of other road users.
