MUKAH: Police here arrested a 31-year-old local woman, suspected of being involved in online gambling activities, during a raid in Jalan Tapang, Pekan Selangau, on Thursday (March 5).
Mukah police chief, DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, said the suspect was detained by a team from the district Criminal Investigation Division at about 3 pm.
The raid was carried out at the five-foot walkway outside a snooker centre in the area where the suspect was believed to be conducting gambling transactions using her moblie phone.
“An inspection of the suspect’s mobile phone found the Mega888 application, which is believed to have been used to facilitate online gambling activities,” Rizal said in a statement on Friday.
Police also seized RM27 in cash believed to be related to the activity.
The suspect and the seized items were brought to the Mukah District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.
Urine screening conducted on the suspect returned negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000, and imprisonment of up to three years upon conviction.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
