KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, commended PETRONAS for its continued commitment to supporting communities in need through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, particularly during the month of Ramadan.
Speaking at a Hari Raya aid distribution programme at Masjid Ikhwanul Islam in Taman Sukma here, he said such initiatives reflect the spirit of compassion and care encouraged in Islam and align with the values promoted under the Malaysia MADANI framework.
He said the fasting month of Ramadan is not merely about abstaining from food and drink but also about purifying the heart and strengthening compassion among members of society.
“Islam teaches us to love others as we love ourselves. During Ramadan, we often see people sharing food with neighbours and giving charity. These acts show compassion and concern for one another, which is the essence of this holy month,” he said.
Fadillah added that programmes such as the festive aid distribution help ensure that no one in the community is left behind, and he encouraged cooperation among community leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies to support those facing hardship.
He also praised the culture of unity and mutual care among Sarawakians, noting that people in the state have long been known for helping one another regardless of religion or background.
The programme was part of the ‘PETRONAS Uplifting Lives Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026’ initiative, organised in collaboration with the Petra Jaya Service Centre, Kuching District Office, Masjid Ikhwanul Islam committee members, and the community leaders in Tupong, Samariang and Satok.
The programme saw food baskets distributed to 350 underprivileged families in Petra Jaya, including those from the state constituencies of Tupong, Samariang and Satok.
Earlier, PETRONAS’ Senior Vice-President – Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), Datuk Bacho Pilong, handed over the festive contributions to Kuching District Officer, Zaidi Sharkawi, during the event witnessed by Fadillah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya.
PETRONAS said the programme forms part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen social impact efforts in Sarawak, in line with the social inclusivity agenda under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Beyond Petra Jaya, similar Hari Raya Aidilfitri initiatives will also benefit another 1,000 recipients across Sarawak, including communities in Bekenu, Bintawa, Bintulu, Limbang and Lawas.
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, and PETRONAS Sarawak’s General Manager, Norazibah M. Rabu.
