MIRI: A local woman here has been fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate’s Court after admitting to acting as an agent for online gambling top-up transactions.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 7(2) of the Open House Gambling Act 1953. The court ordered that she serve three months in jail if the fine is not paid.

Police said the accused had earlier been remanded for two days to assist in investigations.

The offence was committed on Feb 26 at about noon during a surprise inspection carried out by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Miri district police headquarters.

The operation, led by an inspector, took place at an unnumbered business kiosk along Jalan Pujut 1B.

Investigators found that the woman was believed to be offering online gambling credit top-up services using her mobile phone, allowing customers to top up online betting accounts.

During the inspection, police seized a mobile phone believed to have been used to facilitate the transactions, along with RM34 in cash suspected to be linked to the activity.
