KUCHING: A repeat offender was sentenced to 34 months’ jail and fined RM3,500 today after pleading guilty to multiple theft-related charges.
Mohamad Jalil Sidek Bakar, 32, pleaded guilty to five charges before Senior Assistant Registrar Abdurrahman Abrar Jarni, Magistrate Nur Syaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, and Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
He was also ordered to serve an additional six months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
Mohamad Jalil faced three motorcycle theft charges, one under Section 379A(1) of the Penal Code read with Section 34, and two under Section 379A read with Section 34.
The offences occurred in separate incidents: on Jan 16 at about 4.54 am behind a hotel along Jalan Simpang Tiga, on Jan 18 at about 6.50 am at a shop in Jalan Padungan, and between 9 pm on Dec 17, 2025, and 8 am on Dec 18, 2025, at a house in Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.
Court facts showed Mohamad Jalil, with an accomplice still at large, stole motorcycles parked in public areas, with the incidents captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV).
Abdurrahman sentenced him to 24 months’ jail and a RM3,000 fine, in default six months’ jail, for one of the offences.
Nur Syaheeqa handed down 24 months’ jail, while Ling imposed 10 months’ imprisonment to run consecutively.
Mohamad Jalil also admitted to selling stolen motorcycle components worth RM33.60 at a scrap shop in Batu Kawa on Jan 10, 2026, at about 2.30 pm.
Under Section 414 of the Penal Code, Nur Syaheeqa sentenced him to 10 months’ jail and a RM500 fine, in default one month’s jail.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to stealing a bonsai tree in front of a house in Jalan Desa Wira, Batu Kawa, at 9.43 am on Feb 28, captured on CCTV. Ling sentenced him to six months’ jail for the offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution was conducted separately by Deputy Public Prosecutors Chuah Kai Sheng and Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly. Mohamad Jalil was unrepresented.
