KUCHING: A total of 572 applications to sell permitted fireworks in Sarawak have been approved by police ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sarawak Contingent had received 584 applications from traders seeking permits to sell fireworks.

“Out of that number, 572 applications were approved to sell permitted fireworks,” he told reporters after officiating the Program Jalinan Kasih Ramadan PDRM Sarawak Contingent at the Bazar Ramadan Satok here today (Mar 11).

He reminded traders and the public to use fireworks responsibly, advising them not to play fireworks until late at night as it may disturb residents in surrounding areas.

“We advise the public to celebrate in moderation.

“While the use of permitted fireworks is allowed for festive celebrations, they should avoid playing them until midnight as it can affect the rest of nearby residents,” he said.

Earlier, he said the programme at the Ramadan bazaar was part of a community engagement initiative organised by the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department of the Sarawak police contingent.

He said it aims to allow police personnel to interact with the public while observing the festive atmosphere at Ramadan bazaars across the state.
