SIBU: A 24-year-old driver involved in a multi-vehicle collision along Jalan Wong Soon Kai here last night (Mar 12) has tested positive for drugs.

Sibu acting police chief Supt Boniface Bajai said the man, who was driving a Toyota Vios, was believed to have failed to stop at a traffic light before crashing into several vehicles in front of him at about 9.55pm.

The driver was detained to assist investigations and an initial urine screening found him positive for amphetamine.

“No serious injuries were reported, but all vehicles involved sustained severe damage,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, firefighters from the Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call, where one driver had difficulty exiting his vehicle following the collision.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

If convicted, the offender may face up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least two years.
