MIRI: A storage shed was completely destroyed in an early morning fire at Sungai Rait here today (Mar 14), prompting a swift response from the Fire and Rescue Department.
The incident occurred along Sungai Rait road, about 17 kilometres from the nearest fire station.
Firefighters from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched shortly after receiving an emergency call at 5.41 am.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, the fire engine was mobilised within minutes after a distressed call on the incident was received.
The station’s alarm was sounded at 5.41 am, and the first appliance left the station immediately.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 5.59 am and began firefighting operations shortly afterwards.
Upon arrival, the responding team confirmed that a non-permanent storage structure measuring approximately 10 by 20 square feet was already fully engulfed in flames. The structure was destroyed entirely in the blaze.
Firefighters carried out a rapid assessment of the scene before initiating suppression efforts.
The firefighting team deployed a first-response hose line using water from the fire engine’s onboard tank to bring the flames under control. The fire was successfully contained at around 6.11 am.
Firefighters then conducted overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent any risk of the fire reigniting.
The operations concluded at 7.05 am, after which the firefighting units departed the location and returned to the station, arriving at about 7.30 am.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
A Fire and Rescue Department operations report stated that the structure involved was a non-permanent store building which had been completely destroyed by the time firefighters completed their suppression work.
The cause of the fire and the extent of any losses were not immediately known. Authorities are expected to conduct further assessments.
