KAPIT: A 25-year-old man is missing after a wooden boat carrying five people capsized in the Rajang River near here last night (Mar 13).
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the incident occurred at about 7 pm while the group was travelling from Rumah Bunsi at Kampung Atas Kubu along Jalan Sri Baleh.
The boat was on its way to a barge docking area at a wharf near the Kapit Night Street Market when it was believed to have capsized after being hit by strong waves.
“Four occupants managed to swim to safety. However, one of them, identified as Brando Jawi Mamba from Sungai Katibas in Song, could not be found after the incident,” it said in a statement.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched this afternoon (Mar 14), with personnel from the Kapit station heading to the location by aluminium boat.
The victim remained missing at press time.
