KUCHING: The Ministry of Works (KKR) has called on all states, including Sarawak, to consider setting a policy requiring projects to be completed at least 30 days ahead of time (AOT).

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the move is important to enhance project delivery efficiency and reduce delays in the construction sector.

“Yes, every state should consider setting a project implementation policy that targets completion at least 30 days ahead of schedule.

“Each state has a role in monitoring and ensuring projects run smoothly, including considering approaches such as setting earlier completion targets,” he told reporters after visiting the Federal Integrated Government Complex (BGP) construction site here today.

Ahmad said that out of 855 ongoing projects, about one-third are completed ahead of schedule, one-third are on schedule, while the remaining one-third are delayed.

“Out of these 855 projects, the breakdown is clear — one-third AOT, one-third on schedule, and one-third delayed.

“So my instruction to Public Works Department (JKR) officers is that projects behind schedule must be expedited,” he added.

He said a project is categorised as delayed if it exceeds 31 days or more than 10 per cent of its original schedule.

Meanwhile, he noted that the number of “sick projects” remains low at just 4.1 per cent, or 35 projects, out of the ministry’s total portfolio.

“Delayed or problematic projects are not a major issue, at only around four per cent. What we want to highlight are projects completed ahead of time, as they far outnumber the rest,” he said.
