KUCHING: Mulu National Park is once again set to capture global attention as it becomes the venue for the prestigious extreme sports event, the Mulu Eco-Challenge 2026, which will take place on March 29, offering a total prize pool of RM10,000.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the event represents an authentic adventure that highlights the uniqueness of Sarawak’s rainforest and biodiversity through a combination of trail running and bamboo rafting activities.

“The selection of Mulu as the main location is fitting given its status as a national gem recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“Mulu is not only a source of pride for us here, but for all Malaysians, and Sarawak is fortunate to have two World Heritage Sites after the Niah National Park Cave Complex also received similar recognition two years ago,” he said.

He said this during a press conference on the Mulu Eco-Challenge 2026 held at the BaitulMakmur II Building here today, which was also attended by Mulu assemblyman, Datuk Gerawat Gala.

He added that the presence of World Heritage Sites such as Mulu continues to be a major attraction, captivating tourists from around the globe.

According to Abdul Karim, the organisation of this third edition is seen as a proactive step in promoting environmental conservation and preservation more widely.

“This event carries an important message on responsible and sustainable tourism, in line with Sarawak’s promotional slogan – Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festival (CANFF).

“Through this challenge, we hope the beauty of Mulu will go viral worldwide and encourage more people to visit with a greater sense of environmental responsibility,” he added.

He said this year’s edition is expected to attract around 90 to 100 participants from 25 teams, including international participants from Brunei, Singapore, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

He also expressed optimism that hosting an international-level event would have a direct positive economic impact on the local community.

“Participants are expected to visit Penan settlements around Mulu, which are known for producing high-quality handicrafts and woven baskets,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also commended the consistency of the organiser, Grit Event Management, for its commitment to maintaining high standards in nature-based event organisation.

He also noted that the event is supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), AirBorneo as the official airline, and Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa as the official hotel.

“It is hoped that the Mulu Eco-Challenge will continue to grow into one of the iconic eco-adventure events in the region, further strengthening Sarawak’s image on the global tourism map,” he said.
