BAU: A viral dashcam video showing a car being driven dangerously along Jalan Bau-Kuching has led to police action after the driver was found to have been drowsy behind the wheel.

Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A Rahman said the incident, which occurred around 5.34pm on Sunday (Mar 22), was captured by a member of the public and later uploaded on the Facebook page Sarawak Roads Update.

“The footage showed a Perodua Kancil entering the opposite lane near Kampung Keranji, creating a hazardous situation for other road users and risking a potential collision,” he said.

He added that following the viral video, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of Bau police headquarters (IPD) launched an investigation and tracked down the driver involved.

“The driver presented himself at the BSPT Bau IPD office at 1.10pm on Tuesday (Mar 24) to assist in the investigation.

“Initial findings revealed that the driver admitted to driving in a drowsy state while travelling from Bau towards Kuching after attending a religious event in Kampung Blimbing,” he added.

Police found that the driver had committed offences involving crossing double lines and failing to keep to the correct lane, in violation of traffic regulations.

As a result, two traffic summonses were issued against the individual.

Mohd Haide advised road users to ensure they are in a fit condition before driving, particularly on busy roads, to avoid endangering themselves and others.
