BETONG: A 17-year-old teenager was arrested for alleged drug possession and abuse during an operation conducted by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Betong police headquarters (IPD) on Tuesday (Mar 24).
Betong police chief DSP Wan Mohamad Ali Wan Malek said the suspect was detained at about 1pm here under Ops Tapis.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect was believed to be involved in drug-related activities.
“He was subsequently brought to IPD Betong for further action,” he said in a statement.
Wan Mohamad Ali added that a urine screening conducted on him returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Checks on the suspect’s background revealed that he has no prior criminal or drug-related records.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of drugs, which carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, upon conviction.
“It is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug use, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, if convicted,” he said.
The police chief said police take drug-related offences seriously and will not compromise with those involved in such activities.
He also urged members of the public to come forward with information on drug activities in the district.
