KUCHING: A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today after pleading guilty to threatening to hurt his own mother.
Nelson Mary Magrate admitted to a charge of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
If convicted, the accused is punishable with imprisonment for a term of up to two years or a fine, or both.
According to the charge, the accused had, on March 20 at about 10.30 am, telephoned his 55-year-old mother and demanded RM1,000.
He threatened to hurt her and damage her property if she failed to comply.
The incident took place at a flat in Taman Malihah 3 along Jalan Belatok here.
Case facts revealed that the victim, a waitress earning about RM1,500 a month, was unable to meet the demand.
Fearing for her safety following the threats, she lodged a police report.
Investigations further found that Nelson, who is the only child, had frequently demanded money from his mother prior to the incident and would resort to threats and disruptive behaviour if refused.
The victim also suspected that her son was involved in drug abuse.
Police arrested the accused the following day at the five-foot way of a premises in Satok.
A mobile phone was also seized during the arrest.
The court heard that the threats were made during a phone call, which was also overheard by the victim’s sibling, further reinforcing the seriousness of the intimidation.
The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani. Nelson was unrepresented.
