KUCHING: Sarawak’s young swimmers show a noticeable shift in training, said Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (ASAS) President, Pemanca Tan Kun Gee, as 10 swimmers head to China for international exposure ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
The group, made up of five boys and five girls aged 14 to 17, has been identified as part of the state’s early preparations for SUKMA.
“I think most of them are potential SUKMA swimmers, but with six months to go, we are continuing to push and work hard,” Tan said.

The swimmers will be guided by China-trained coach, Li Zhong, who joined Sarawak less than a year ago. Tan highlighted Li’s influence, noting a marked increase in training intensity and discipline.
“His training is much tougher. Some of the swimmers are even a bit scared of him,” he told Sarawak Tribune when met recently.
Tan explained that Li’s programme differs from previous foreign coaches, including former Filipino coach, Frederick John Hermoso.
“His style was more American-based, while this programme follows a Chinese approach,” he said.
From March 23 to April 5, the swimmers will train in Shenyang under Li’s former coach, a gold medallist, gaining exposure to a different training environment to strengthen their competitive edge.
The training group includes swimmers from across Sarawak, including Miri and Bintulu, with about half currently from the Power Aquatics Swimming Club (PASC) and others from clubs statewide.
“With stricter training, overseas exposure, and a wider talent pool, we aim to give Sarawak the best chance at SUKMA,” Tan said.
