KUCHING: Two separate drug raids conducted here on Mar 29 led to the arrest of four local men and the seizure of more than 1.2 kg of suspected methamphetamine, in what police described as a major success in ongoing anti-narcotics operations.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said in the first raid at about 1pm, a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters (IPK) arrested a 38-year-old man at a house along Jalan Peace.

“A search on the suspect led to the discovery of 85.08 gm of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of RM8,500.

“Initial urine screening tests found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, while checks revealed he has three previous criminal records,” he said in a statement.

Alexson added that the suspect has been remanded for five days from Mar 31 to Apr 4 to assist in investigations.

In the meantime, Alexson added that later the same day, at about 8.10pm, police carried out a second raid in the BDC area, resulting in the arrest of three men aged between 35 and 36.

“Authorities seized approximately 1,200 gm of suspected methamphetamine in the operation, estimated to be worth RM60,000.

“All three suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. Background checks showed that two of them have past criminal records,” he added.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days from Mar 31 to Apr 6 to facilitate investigations.

“Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction,” he said.

Alexson said the success of the operations was the result of continuous intelligence gathering and cooperation from the public.

He stressed that police will not compromise with any parties involved in drug trafficking, describing drugs as the nation’s number one enemy.

Members of the public with information on drug-related activities are urged to channel it to the NCID hotline at 012-208 7222 or the Sarawak Police Contingent hotline at 017-592 9211.
