BETONG: A 45-year-old man was arrested here on Monday (Mar 30) for alleged drug possession and suspected involvement in drug-related activities.
Betong police chief DSP Wan Mohamad Ali Wan Malek said the arrest was carried out at 1.40pm by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) of the Betong police headquarters (IPK) during Ops Tapis Khas.
“The suspect was detained in the Betong area before being taken to the district police headquarters for further investigation.
“A urine screening test conducted on the suspect returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,” he said in a statement.
Checks also revealed that the suspect has no prior criminal or drug-related record.
The case is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug possession, which carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
He is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug use, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, if convicted.
The police chief stressed that police take drug offences seriously and will not compromise in curbing such activities.
He also urged the public to channel information on drug-related activities in the district.
