KUCHING: Sarawak’s bridge construction programme remains on track despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with no major disruptions expected to affect delivery this year.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said while global uncertainties may pose challenges, they are unlikely to derail progress.

“There may be a problem, but it will not reach a point where it will disrupt construction and we are confident it will progress as planned,” he said when met by reporters at the Sarawak Infrastructure Engagement Programme 2026, held at Pullman Hotel, here, today.

He added that the state is closely monitoring supply chains, particularly for construction materials, to ensure project timelines are maintained.

“That’s why I went to BCCK 2 immediately to discuss the purchasing programme of materials where they can get the materials and what their plans are,” he said.

Uggah said the eight bridges targeted for completion this year are progressing as scheduled, including the Batang Lupar 1 bridge.

According to a report, the update comes amid Sarawak’s ongoing infrastructure drive, which saw the Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) achieve a 97.39 per cent utilisation of its development allocation in 2025.

Eight major bridges were completed in 2025, marking a key milestone in improving connectivity and supporting economic activity across the state.

Looking ahead, the state is targeting the completion of additional bridges this year as part of its broader push to strengthen infrastructure delivery.
