KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has announced key leadership changes within its group to strengthen its organisational structure and support long-term growth.

Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said the appointments reflect the company’s focus on developing leadership with strong operational experience and strategic direction.

Yusri Safri has been appointed CEO of Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), effective Apr 1, taking over from Lau Kim Swee, and will report to Sharbini.

“Yusri brings a combination of deep technical expertise and strong leadership acumen, with a broad management portfolio across retail, distribution and corporate services,” he said.

During his tenure in contract and procurement, Yusri led initiatives in category management, procurement efficiency, vendor development and centralised operational planning, contributing to Sarawak Energy’s recognition by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).

Meanwhile, Lau has been appointed executive vice president for Project Delivery for Sarawak Energy Group and its subsidiaries, while continuing to serve on the Group executive committee.

In his new role, he will oversee the end-to-end delivery of major power infrastructure projects, which are key to strengthening grid resilience and supporting Sarawak’s goal of achieving 10 gigawatts (GW) capacity by 2030.

“Lau’s professionalism, commitment to excellence and transformative leadership at SESCO make him well-suited for this portfolio,” Sharbini said.

He added that the company remains confident in Lau’s ability to deliver large-scale projects safely, on schedule and in line with international standards.

Since assuming the role of SESCO CEO in 2016, Lau led the utility’s transformation by improving supply reliability, reducing power theft losses and advancing digitalisation.

Under his leadership, SESCO introduced Smart Grid systems and customer-focused initiatives such as the SEB cares mobile application and Smart Retail services, while fostering a high-performance and customer-oriented culture.

Sarawak Energy said the leadership transition underscores its commitment to strengthening internal capabilities while continuing to deliver reliable and renewable energy for Sarawak’s development.
