SIBU: Participation in volunteer organisations is a vital platform for shaping the younger generation, equipping them with first aid skills, leadership values, and a spirit of cooperation.

Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, emphasised that involvement in bodies such as the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) provides youth with comprehensive exposure to self-development.

“Experience in volunteer activities can produce individuals who are more disciplined, resilient and responsible,” he said.

Chieng noted a concerning trend where young people are becoming less involved in outdoor activities compared to previous generations who were more active in sports and uniformed clubs.

“Many young people today are more comfortable spending time at home after school. Compared to before, participation in group activities is decreasing and this needs to be addressed,” he said when met after officiating the MRCS on Saturday.

He also commended the commitment of volunteer teams, particularly MRCS Sibu, for their constant readiness to assist the community during emergencies such as fires and floods.

“In many situations, volunteers are among the first to come forward to provide assistance, showing how important their role is in the community,” Chieng added.

He further noted that volunteerism is not solely about technical skills but also about fostering leadership and cooperation – values essential for community life.

In this regard, he urged the public to continue supporting MRCS’ efforts through donations to ensure more young people can be trained in first aid and character development.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, can have a big impact. It not only helps financially, but also strengthens the spirit of togetherness within the community.

“The funds raised will be used to train more members, especially students, so that they are prepared to face emergencies and have the potential to become quality future leaders,” Chieng said.

Also in attendance was MRCS Sibu Branch Chairman, Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee.
