KUCHING: Medan Raya (MASJA) Petra Jaya has been set as the permanent venue for the second-week Kuching Car Free Morning (KCFM) programme each month.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said MASJA has proven to be a suitable venue, as it is a popular recreational area, especially on weekends.
He also said its large open space allows people to run, jog and cycle comfortably, while the surrounding natural scenery provides fresh air and a safe environment due to low traffic volume.
“Starting today, the DBKU will organise KCFM over three consecutive weeks each month, with the first week at Padang Merdeka, the second week at MASJA and the third week returning to Padang Merdeka.
“The fourth week will remain open for future planning. For now, the programme will run during the first three weeks of each month,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the KCFM Raya Edition at Medan Raya (MASJA) Petra Jaya today (April 12).
He said the KCFM originally began at Padang Merdeka several years ago, held during the first week of each month.
Following a strong recommendation from the Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, a third-week session was later introduced.
As the programme is currently in the final week of Syawal, today’s edition carried a Hari Raya theme, with many participants dressed in traditional attire, reflecting the festive spirit.
“This is part of our approach to incorporate cultural celebrations into the programme. Previously, the initiative also featured other festive themes.
“Through these efforts, we aim to highlight the strong harmony and unity among the people of Sarawak, which remains a key foundation in all programmes organised for the Kuching North community,” he said.
Also present were DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman, DBKU Director Ramzi Abdillah, DBKU’s council members and senior management.
