SERIAN: Police arrested a 37-year-old man from Kampung Tebakang Melayu here on Tuesday (Apr 14) for possessing suspected syabu (methamphetamine).

Serian police chief Supt Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said the arrest was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) of the Serian police headquarters (IPD).

He said the seized syabu weighed 5.19gm.

The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a jail term of up to five years and whipping of not less than three strokes and not more than nine strokes upon conviction.

In addition, the suspect is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act after his urine test returned positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Freddy added that the police would not hesitate to take stern action against repeat drug offenders, including invoking Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“Under this provision, repeat offenders, if convicted, may face imprisonment of between five and seven years, along with up to three strokes of the cane,” he said.

He stressed that the police will continue to intensify efforts against drug abuse and trafficking.
