KUCHING: The upcoming Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention this weekend is expected to galvanise party morale and sharpen its election messaging ahead of a likely year-end state poll.

Political analyst Peter Minos said the gathering will serve as a crucial platform for GPS leaders to rally members, highlight achievements, and prepare the coalition for the coming election.

He noted that top leaders are certain to “speak up to raise morale and heat up the election mood,” signalling the start of a more energised campaign phase as speculation grows over the timing of the state polls.

According to Minos, speeches at the convention will focus heavily on GPS’s track record in government, particularly the coalition’s achievements since its formation, while also outlining the work that remains to be done for the people of Sarawak.

This, he said, is aimed at strengthening voter confidence and reinforcing the coalition’s credibility.

“With the election in mind, GPS leaders will undoubtedly make pledges to do more and strive for greater progress — messages that are appealing to voters and help create the right election mood,” he said when asked what to expect at the GPS Convention on Apr 19.

Minos, a veteran politician, added that such conventions are not merely symbolic but essential for maintaining unity within a coalition comprising Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

“A political coalition like GPS must meet and get together as often as possible. This is normal and expected. The hope is that the more they meet each other, the stronger the comradeship and unity within the grouping,” he explained.

He also expects the GPS chairman and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Open to deliver a firm reminder to party members not to be complacent or take the coming election lightly, despite past electoral successes. Instead, leaders are likely to stress discipline, preparedness, and grassroots engagement.

At the same time, Minos said the leadership will highlight forward-looking development plans, including new industries, infrastructure projects, and initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and improving the well-being of Sarawakians.

Touching on global uncertainties, particularly tensions in the Middle East that could affect economic stability, he said the leadership may also advise the public to spend prudently while assuring that the government will take steps to ease financial burdens.

Ultimately, Minos believes the convention’s primary objective is clear — to raise morale, strengthen unity, and position GPS strongly as it heads into a highly anticipated state election later this year.
