KUCHING: A proposed second phase of Jalan Padawan is now in the pipeline, aimed at extending connectivity deeper into rural communities.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said he was currently bidding for the implementation of Jalan Padawan Phase II, which would stretch from Teng Bukap to Annah Rais.
He revealed that the proposed RM90-million project is presently being worked out by the Public Works Department (JKR).
“This new phase will be a continuation of the existing Jalan Padawan Phase I, which runs from Tapah to Teng Bukap,” he said, adding that the ongoing Phase I project was progressing smoothly.
The Tarat assemblyman noted that Phase I, which spanned approximately 15 kilometres, remained on track under current implementation.
He said the RM80-million project was funded by the Sarawak Government under the Projek Rakyat initiative.
Sagah explained that while the cost might appear substantial for a 15-km stretch, it reflected the complexity of the upgrading works involved.
“This is not just about laying a new road surface. It involves extensive engineering work, including earthworks, drainage improvements and the realignment of existing utilities,” he said.
Among the key components are the relocation and upgrading of essential infrastructure such as electricity supply lines, water pipelines and telecommunications systems.
He added that modern requirements, particularly the installation of fibre optic cables, were part of efforts to enhance digital connectivity in the area.
The upgraded route is expected to provide better driving conditions, improved safety and shorter travel times for users.
Jalan Padawan Phase I will significantly enhance connection between rural settlements and nearby towns, benefitting local communities, small businesses and agricultural activities.
Sagah stressed that the project was part of the Sarawak government’s broader commitment to improving rural infrastructure and narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas.
He added that the successful implementation of Phase I would pave the way for the proposed Phase II extension from Teng Bukap to Annah Rais, further strengthening the road network in the Tarat constituency.
