MUKAH: Darkness still cloaked a plantation on the outskirts when enforcement officers launched a pre-dawn raid that uncovered dozens of alleged immigration offenders.
‘Ops Sapu’, carried out by Sibu Immigration Enforcement Unit, occurred at around 1.40 am with a 25-member team supported by the Special Action Team (PTK), combing through the vast plantation grounds.
A total of 146 individuals were inspected for their documentations – only one was a Malaysian, while the rest were foreigners.
By the end of the sweep, 62 had been detained for various offences such as overstaying, failing to produce valid travel documents, and possessing voided documents.
All detainees were taken to Semuja Immigration Depot in Serian for further action.
The Sarawak Immigration Department said they are also probing the premises owner for allegedly employing and harbouring undocumented workers.
They warned that such operationS will continue, and hiring or sheltering undocumented foreigners carries serious consequences under the law.
