KUCHING: A moment of four-language prayer delivery at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Convention today (April 19) amused attendees while powerfully reflecting the coalition’s spirit of unity in diversity.
The opening prayer, delivered in Malay, Iban, Mandarin and Arabic, was led by Deputy Youth Chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bukit Kota branch, Suhaimi Mohamad, drawing attention for its unique multilingual composition and smooth execution.
The three-minute recitation, which combined the four languages seamlessly, was the result of extensive preparation and practice.
“For me, reciting a prayer in four languages reflects the uniqueness of Sarawak, which is home to diverse ethnic groups that can be showcased even in prayer,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters at the convention held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
Suhaimi said he spent nearly two months preparing for the recitation, with special attention given to Mandarin, which he found most challenging due to differences in pronunciation and his limited exposure to the language during his time at SJK Chung Hua.
“At first, I tried using digital translations, but the pronunciation was not accurate. So I took the initiative to relearn with the help of Chinese friends and local traders,” he said.
Suhaimi added that the effort helped him improve his pronunciation to ensure it was more accurate and contextually appropriate.
He described the experience as meaningful, reflecting Sarawak’s multicultural identity.
“Alhamdulillah, it was a very meaningful experience. It is not easy to stand on stage and deliver a prayer in multiple languages,” he said.
