MIRI: Two 15-year-old boys were killed after a motorcycle was struck from behind by a car on the Pan Borneo Highway in Miri.
The crash occurred at about 7.45pm on 19 April near the junction to Jalan Simpang Alam Bumi in Suai.
Police said the motorcycle, carrying the two teenagers, was travelling along the highway when it was hit by a car driven by a 32-year-old local man. The driver was travelling from Miri towards Bintulu at the time of the collision.
Both victims were taken to Miri Hospital for treatment. However, they later succumbed to their injuries. The rider was pronounced dead at 2.30pm on 20 April, while the pillion passenger died at 5.44pm the same day.
The driver of the car was not injured.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the driver had been detained to assist with investigations. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to causing death by dangerous driving and carries a heavy penalty upon conviction.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Insp Mohd Faizul Ab Rahim, or report to the nearest police station.
