KUALA LUMPUR: A decision on whether to proceed with or postpone the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will be determined after a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee on April 30.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the ministry is still awaiting official feedback from the Selangor State Government before any collective decision is made.
“At the ministry level, no decision has been made as it must be decided collectively by the SUKMA Supreme Committee,” he said.
He stressed that the matter involves multiple stakeholders, including state governments, the National Sports Council, State Sports Councils and the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
“This is because decisions related to SUKMA do not only involve the ministry, but also state exco members, the National Sports Council, State Sports Councils, the Olympic Council of Malaysia and other relevant bodies,” he added.
A special meeting will be convened to gather views from all parties, including revisiting funding considerations previously decided at Cabinet level.
“As such, the step taken now is to obtain views from all parties, and I will call for a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee on April 30,” he said.
The development follows a call by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to postpone SUKMA 2026, citing concerns over global energy challenges and geopolitical uncertainties impacting the economy and hosting costs.- TVS
