BAU: A 14-year-old boy was found dead after he was believed to have drowned while bathing in Sungai Staat, Kampung Segubang yesterday (Apr 22).

The victim, a secondary school student from Siniawan, had gone to the river with five friends when he suddenly disappeared at around 2.40 pm.

Bau Police Chief, Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the group realised the boy was missing and attempted to search for him but failed, prompting them to seek help from nearby villagers.

Police were alerted to the incident and a team was dispatched to the scene, about 350 metres on foot through a forested area from the end of the village.

Firefighters from Bau station and villagers were already conducting search efforts in the river upon their arrival.

“The victim was eventually located by a villager at the riverbed, about eight feet deep.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and his body has been taken to Bau Hospital for a post-mortem,” he said.

Haide said the case has been classified as sudden death.
