KUCHING: A drug distribution network using vape cartridges laced with suspected cannabis liquid has been dismantled following the arrest of two local men in targeted operations around Jalan Setia Raja here.
Based on intelligence from the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) seized 1,281 vape cartridges containing an estimated 3,202.50 grammes of cannabis liquid.
The seizure, valued at RM576,450, is believed to be enough to supply up to 1,281 drug users.
Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the suspects, aged 28 and 38, were acting as runners and transporters for the syndicate, earning RM8,000 for each delivery.
“Further investigations indicated that the group has been active since November last year.
“The syndicate is believed to have sourced its supply from the Peninsula, using homestay premises as storage and repackaging hubs before sending the drugs to Sarawak via courier services.
“Upon arrival, the drug consignments would be collected and distributed across the state,” he said at a press conference today (Apr 23).
Both suspects have no prior records and tested negative for drugs in initial urine screenings.
He added that a vehicle estimated to be worth RM12,000 was also seized under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
The 28-year-old suspect has been remanded for seven days until April 27, while the 38-year-old has been remanded for four days until April 24.
Zainal said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
