KUCHING: Growing concern over personal safety and harassment saw 100 women participate in a self-defence empowerment seminar held in conjunction with the National Healthy Malaysia Agenda (ANMS) roadshow.
The seminar, held at the Kuching Waterfront, was organised as part of the programme to enliven the 10th Edition TYT Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Muaythai Championship & Borneo Cup 2026.
Participants aged between 10 and 55 took part in the session, reflecting increasing awareness among the community on the importance of personal safety and the need to address issues related to sexual harassment.
The seminar was conducted by Sarawak combat sports athletes, Amisha and Jihin Radzuan, who shared insights on recognising potential threats and introduced basic self-defence techniques.
Participants were also guided through practical methods to escape from dangerous situations, with emphasis on awareness, quick response and confidence.
Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) President, Jumaat Ibrahim, described the initiative as timely and essential, particularly in empowering women with fundamental self-defence knowledge.
“Although this is only at an introductory level, the knowledge shared by our instructors is highly beneficial, especially in helping women protect themselves and build confidence when faced with risky situations,” he said.
He added that the encouraging response from participants highlighted a strong interest among women to further develop their self-defence skills.
Jumaat said PMNS welcomed suggestions to organise similar programmes more frequently and expand them to other parts of the state in the future.
The final day of the championship also featured a range of community-focused activities, including aerobics sessions, health and fitness screenings, a Tai Chi demonstration, Rahmah MADANI sales, and other initiatives promoting healthy lifestyles.
