KUCHING: Former Malaysia Games (SUKMA) player Danny Lee Sheng Yee has described the BAM Coaching Course Level 1 as an eye-opening experience, saying it helped him better understand the detailed science behind badminton coaching.

The 25-year-old from Kota Samarahan said the programme, organised by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in collaboration with the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA), offered valuable insights often overlooked by players moving into coaching roles.

“I’m from Sarawak, from Kota Samarahan. First of all, I would like to thank BAM because they gave this opportunity to every player,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the SBA Hall here recently.

Danny, who competed in SUKMA in 2018 and 2022, said the course broadened his understanding of training concepts, particularly in sports science and player development.

“For me, I’m very blessed because I’m also a current badminton player. This helped us a lot because the way we think is very simple, but it’s actually very detailed for coaches,” he explained.

He added that among the key takeaways were knowledge on muscle groups, basic training principles for beginners, and the importance of structured coaching.

“The most important thing is we learned about muscles, basic training for beginners, and also had the chance to make friends among coaches,” he said.

Currently involved in coaching state-level Under-12 players in Samarahan, Danny said he is keen to further his development as a coach, particularly in training periodisation and structured planning.

“For now, I already understand the basics, but I want to learn more about how to manage periodisation and training plans,” he said.

He is currently coaching privately, working with around three players, and also assisting in developing young state athletes.

Danny added that the course has strengthened his passion to continue in coaching and contribute to the development of badminton in Sarawak.
