MIRI: The development of a landmark Miri Waterfront and the transformation of existing water retention ponds into integrated recreational and tourism zones are among key initiatives proposed to beautify the city, enhance liveability, and strengthen its tourism appeal.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said both proposals reflected aspirations frequently voiced by the people of Miri and should be seriously considered as part of the city’s future growth agenda.
“First, the proposal to develop the Miri Waterfront as a city landmark. We can see how the waterfront in Kuching has become a major attraction, not only as a recreational area but also as a successful tourism product.
“I believe Miri has the same potential to create an iconic public space that can be enjoyed by the people while attracting visitors from within the country and abroad,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the Miri Division Sarawakku Sayang 2026 programme at Miri Stadium here on Saturday.
He added that Miri’s existing water retention pond areas could also be linked and developed in an integrated manner as recreational and tourism zones.
“With proper planning, these areas could be transformed into locations for various leisure activities such as brisk walking, cycling and light water activities, including boating or kayaking, while at the same time maintaining their function as water management infrastructure,” he said.
Lee stressed that both initiatives would not only beautify Miri but also improve residents’ quality of life while boosting local tourism.
Meanwhile, he said the government has also formulated a comprehensive master development plan for the Beraya area in the Subis district to support the continued growth of Miri and surrounding areas.
“This development will include various key components such as administrative zones, housing, commercial centres, hotels, international schools, and recreational facilities including a golf course, marina, convention centre, as well as the construction of an international school,” said Lee.
