KUCHING: Speculation that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may call for a general election (GE) as early as the third quarter has placed the government in a difficult position, says a political observer.

Datuk Peter Minos said the timing of the polls would be critical, as both early and delayed elections carry political risks.

“It is very tough for the Prime Minister to decide. If he holds a GE by October this year, it may appear too early and many may not be ready, which could backfire.

“However, if it is held later, with the Malaysian economy expected to soften — largely due to external factors such as the Iran conflict — voter sentiment could deteriorate, and the ruling government may be blamed,” he said.

On the issue of fuel subsidies, Minos said any move to reduce them would likely be unpopular among voters already grappling with rising costs.

“If petrol prices go up, people and voters will not like it. The government must consider whether the current subsidies are sustainable, and if not, whether they need to be reduced.

“Personally, I think it would be prudent to maintain the current fuel subsidies for now and proceed with the GE. Again, we will have to wait and see, he said.

Minos pointed out that cost-of-living pressures remain a major concern affecting both voters and businesses.

“Costs of petrol, food and building materials have increased significantly in the past month. People are complaining, incomes are stagnant, and many are facing financial strain.

“Business operators are also dealing with higher labour and material costs. Overall, there is widespread dissatisfaction, and this will ultimately influence the political climate and election mood,” he said.

Minos said such conditions could push the government to consider holding elections sooner rather than later.

“Perhaps the thinking is to hold the GE before things worsen. In politics, anything can happen,” he said.

On Sarawak’s political landscape, Minos said the state election is likely to be held before the end of the year, ahead of the expiry of the current State Legislative Assembly term early next year.

“Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is expected to perform well despite the current challenges. However, if a GE is called soon as speculated, it could complicate matters,” he said.
