SIBU: The spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ which symbolises unity in diversity must continue to be strengthened to ensure the stability and future of the state.
Bawang Assan Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said the spirit reflects the true spirit of Sarawak which always prioritises harmony between races, cultures and religions.
“Despite our diverse races and backgrounds, the people of Sarawak have always lived in peace, mutual respect and cooperation.
“These values must continue to be preserved,” he said at the Sibu Longhouse Chiefs’ Association (PTRS)’s 16th Anniversary Dinner held at a restaurant here last night (Apr 25).
Wong, who is also Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice president, stressed that the role of the longhouse chief is very important because they are not just community leaders, but also guardians of customs, preservers of harmony and a link between the people and the government.
He said that in the current increasingly challenging environment, the longhouse chief must continue to unite the community, solve problems wisely, guide the younger generation and ensure that no community is left out of the development stream.

“Successful development can only be achieved through close cooperation between the people, elected representatives and government agencies.
“The longhouse chief plays an important role in identifying the needs of the people, ensuring that projects are implemented well, channeling feedback and mobilising community support,” he explained.
Touching on the approaching State Election (PRN), Wong said it was a crucial moment that would determine the political stability, continuity of development and the future direction of Sarawak.
He explained that the state’s success today was built on the foundation of unity and political stability under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and that this must continue to be maintained.
In this regard, he called upon the longhouse chiefs to play a responsible role in fostering unity, ensuring accurate information reaches the people, avoiding division and working closely with local elected representatives.
“This is not a matter of individuals, but a matter of securing the future of Sarawak for future generations,” added Wong, who is also PDP Bawang Assan Branch chairman.
Among those present at the event were PDP treasurer-general Datuk Teo Boon Siew; PTRS advisor Temenggong Stanley Geramong; PTRS chairman Dieo Kanyan; Sean Wong; and organising chairman Peter Tinggom Santap.
