MIRI: Two state-backed financial initiatives are opening new pathways for Sarawakian youths to pursue creative and entrepreneurial ambitions.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat said the Sarawak government is providing targeted support through grants designed to nurture talent and innovation among young people.

Speaking at the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) pocket talk at the main hall of Miri Stadium on Sunday, he outlined the Sarawak Youth Creative Industry Fund (SYCIF) as a key initiative for those in the creative sector.

He stressed that SYCIF is a grant-based facility, not a loan, enabling applicants to access funding without repayment obligations.

“This grant has been available since 2019 and is managed by a committee under our ministry.

“Youths can visit the official website to learn more and submit their applications,” he said.

Ripin added that the ministry is also introducing the Sarawak Youth Startup Grant under the Sarawak Youth StartUp (SYStartup) Programme, aimed at supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.

However, he noted that the initiative is still undergoing final negotiations with Affin Bank, with a formal announcement to be made once approvals are secured.

“When everything is finalised, it will be announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg together with our Minister,” he said, while offering a preview of the upcoming scheme.

Beyond funding, Ripin urged young Sarawakians to actively participate in capacity-building programmes, particularly the SYStartup Cohort 3, scheduled to be held in Sibu this year.

Organised by the ministry, the eight-day intensive course focuses on innovation, technology and creativity in entrepreneurship.

The programme, previously held in Kuching in 2024 and Miri last year, is open to Sarawakians aged 18 to 40, including fresh graduates, school-leavers and those keen to venture into business.

Ripin said such initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to empowering youth through both financial assistance and skills development opportunities.
