SRI AMAN: Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli conducted surprise inspections at SMK Lingga and SMK Simanggang to assess student safety, welfare and overall school management.

He was accompanied by Jasmine Hayward from the School Management Sector of the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN).

At SMK Lingga, the inspection focused on safety measures, environmental cleanliness and compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the school hostel.

Observations found that the presence of wardens on duty alongside security personnel played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

Omar emphasised that systematic hostel management and continuous monitoring by the school are key to creating a safe, conducive and comfortable environment that supports both learning and character development.

“The visit reflects JPN Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to ensuring all institutions under its purview maintain high standards, particularly in safeguarding student welfare,” he said.

Meanwhile, at SMK Simanggang, Omar continued his monitoring efforts aimed at strengthening school management quality and educational excellence.

Upon arrival, he was received by principal Jaya Salleh, along with teachers and hostel wardens.

During the visit, Omar also engaged with Form Six students, offering words of encouragement and advice to motivate them to remain focused on their studies and strive for academic excellence.

He later toured the school hostel to personally inspect facilities, including cleanliness, comfort, maintenance and safety conditions.

“A safe and conducive hostel environment is essential in supporting students’ well-being and academic focus,” he said.

Omar also interacted with hostel wardens to gather feedback on daily management and safety measures, stressing the importance of strict adherence to SOPs and readiness in handling emergency situations.

He spoke about the need to embrace the challenges outlined in the Malaysia Development Plan 2026–2035, particularly in nurturing knowledgeable, highly skilled and globally competitive individuals.

The surprise inspections highlight JPN Sarawak’s continued proactive approach in ensuring student welfare, quality teaching and learning, as well as effective school management remain at the highest level, especially in terms of hostel safety and well-being.
