KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has clarified that a recent Pre-Gawai programme in Bintulu, which has since gone viral on social media, was organised entirely by the local community without official ministry involvement.

In a press statement today (April 29), MOTAC emphasised that the event did not receive cooperation, allocations or official support from the ministry.

Consequently, all aspects of the programme’s execution fall under the responsibility of the local organisers.

The ministry noted that its minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, attended the event solely upon invitation to show support for the local community and to celebrate the upcoming Gawai festivities.

“MOTAC appreciates the efforts of the Bintulu community in organising the Pre-Gawai celebration, which reflects the unity, cultural richness, and unique traditions of the local people,” the statement said.

Addressing the viral issues surrounding the event’s proceedings, the ministry urged the public to view the celebration through a positive lens, noting that it was a traditional celebration tailored to local customs.

MOTAC further stressed that cultural celebrations should not be politicised by any party, warning that sensationalising such matters could undermine long-standing social harmony.

“The spirit of togetherness displayed in the Pre-Gawai programme reflects the nation’s aspirations to foster unity and bridge the gap between races through cultural platforms,” it said.

MOTAC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Malaysia’s cultural diversity and communal harmony, guided by the principles of mutual respect between all races and traditions.
