SARIKEI: A total of 209 longhouse units (doors) here have benefitted from the handover of new housing projects aimed at enhancing the living standards and safety of the local community.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok assemblyman, officiated the handover during a series of working visits to several longhouses in the district recently.
He said the door installation project reflects the government’s continuous commitment to ensuring longhouse residents enjoy safer and more comfortable living conditions.
“This door handover project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring longhouse residents continue to enjoy a more comfortable and safer life,” he said during his visit today (April 29).
He added that the government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of longhouse communities through various development initiatives, including the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Project (PPRMS), People-Friendly Project (PMR) and others.
Among the longhouses visited were Rumah Roslie Atul along Jalan Kim San; Rumah Anthony Suding, Rumah Man Sulang, Rumah Doris Baling and Rumah Didong Barak in Simpang Koko, Sungai Paoh; and Rumah Stie Ubong in Ulu Bayong, Sungai Tapang.
During the visit, several nearby longhouses including Rumah Rosita Kuan, Rumah Jen Jimmy, Rumah Lamban Muchoi, Rumah Tracy James, Rumah Steve Rau, Rumah Jimboon Embol, Rumah Sebu Kijon, Rumah Kilau Grenang, Rumah Roseni Ngkarong, and Rumah Assun Uping also received the project upgrades.
Huang also encouraged longhouse residents to submit applications through the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) under the Longhouse Housing Loan Scheme for new longhouse construction.
“The initiative provides an important opportunity for rural communities to enjoy more comfortable, safer and better-planned housing, while improving overall quality of life,” he added.
Local residents expressed their appreciation and gratitude to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, acknowledging the government’s continued support in improving rural living standards.
