BINTULU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a tugboat and six crew members suspected of operating without a valid licence off Kuala Kemena on Tuesday (Apr 28).

Bintulu MMEA director Captain Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah said the vessel was intercepted about three nautical miles northwest of the area during an enforcement patrols.

“Initial inspections found the tugboat’s crew had committed an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for operating without a valid Domestic Shipping Licence (DSL).

“If convicted, the vessel owner may face a fine of up to RM5,000.

“The tugboat and its crew were escorted to MMEA Bintulu Vessel Detention Centre, where the case has been handed over to investigating officers for further action,” he said.

Muhammad Suffian said the move reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to tightening maritime enforcement, particularly in curbing breaches that could jeopardise the safety of the country’s waters.

He also reminded the maritime community to comply with all regulations and safety procedures when operating at sea to avoid legal consequences.
