KUCHING: The Sarawak Performing Arts Centre (SPAC) is set to be completed in 2027, enhancing the organisation of major statewide events under one roof.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027 and will significantly improve the staging of performing arts and cultural events.

“It was initially scheduled for completion in the first quarter, but has been slightly extended due to earlier issues that needed to be addressed.

“Nevertheless, we are very satisfied with the progress of the SPAC’s development,” he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the 2nd Born to Dance International Competition 2026 at the BCM here today (May 3).

At present, he said, various performances and cultural events are spread across several venues including the State Legislative Assembly Hall, Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) and more, but SPAC will centralise major productions for better coordination.

“With the establishment of the SPAC in the future, events like what we are seeing today can be held there. Larger events will be moved there.

“The place will be bigger and the audience capacity will also be larger as the new centre will be two to three times larger and will also feature better acoustics,” he said.

For the record, the project’s Theatre Hall will have a total seating capacity of 600, comprising 412 seats on the first floor (including 404 standard seats and eight VIP seats), 180 seats on the second floor, and eight royal seats.

The complex will also feature a 754-seat multi-purpose hall and a 124-seat black box theatre, along with supporting facilities such as a visual art gallery, dance studio, and music studio.
