KUCHING: The certificate recognising the Sarawak Delta as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) was presented to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at a brief ceremony here today (May 7).
The certificate was handed over by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who also serves as the Second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development and adviser to the Sarawak Delta UGGp.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, members of the State Cabinet, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
The Sarawak Delta UGGp spans about 3,112 square kilometres and features significant geological landscapes, rich biodiversity including orangutan habitats, as well as indigenous cultural heritage.

The recognition followed 17 years of efforts led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, involving various stakeholders.
It strengthens Sarawak’s standing at the international level in the conservation of natural heritage and cultural assets.
Earlier, a Sarawak delegation led by Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, received the certificate from UNESCO in Paris on April 27.
