KUCHING: The growing threat posed by illegal money lenders has once again come under the spotlight following a case involving a family from Stutong Baru allegedly subjected to threats and harassment over a loan that escalated from RM600 to RM19,000.
In a press statement on Thursday (May 7), Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of borrowing from illegal lenders, describing such situations as ending in “nightmares” for victims and their families.
According to Yap, the woman who approached him for assistance claimed that her brother had initially borrowed RM600, but the debt allegedly ballooned to RM19,000 due to excessive interest and unlawful demands imposed by the syndicate.
He said the family is now living in fear after allegedly receiving threats and harassment from the illegal money lender, adding that two police reports have already been lodged over the matter.
“Illegal money lenders prey on vulnerable individuals who are facing hardship.
“They trap borrowers in a vicious cycle of fear and debt. No amount borrowed is worth sacrificing the safety and peace of mind of your family,” he said.
Yap urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and take firm action against those involved in illegal lending and criminal intimidation.
He stressed that residents must be protected from threats, harassment and unlawful acts carried out by such syndicates.
At the same time, he reminded the public not to seek financial assistance from illegal money lenders regardless of their circumstances.
“There may be quick money at the beginning, but the consequences can destroy lives.
“The public must understand that illegal money lenders are not a solution — they are the beginning of a bigger disaster,” he warned.
Yap also advised individuals facing harassment from illegal lenders to immediately lodge police reports and seek assistance from the authorities instead of remaining silent.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting efforts to keep the community safe from criminal activities and intimidation.
