KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng shared Mother’s Day cheer with hawkers and members of the public during visits to several markets and hawker centres here on Saturday.
Accompanied by councillors Chai Ju Loon, Judy Kho Poh Gek and Albert Tay Seng Pin, the mayor distributed flowers and Shòu tao bao (longevity buns) to women hawkers and senior citizens.

The initiative, aimed at honouring the tireless contributions of mothers to their families and the local community, covered Foochow Market, Bintawa Market, Temple Foodcourt, Sungai Apong Market and the Pending Jetty.
According to Wee, the initiative was aimed at appreciating mothers, women hawkers and senior citizens who continue contributing tirelessly to their families and the local community.
“Mothers play a very important role in shaping strong families, caring communities, and a compassionate society,” he said in a statement.
He added that many hawkers in Kuching South work long hours daily to support their families, and their sacrifices and dedication deserved recognition and appreciation.
Wee said Mother’s Day was not only a celebration but also a reminder of the importance of love, respect, care and family values.
“A strong city begins with strong families and caring communities,” he said.
He also noted that Kuching South has consistently emphasised people-centred development, where community wellbeing, inclusiveness and family values remain important elements in building a harmonious and caring city.
The distribution of flowers and longevity buns symbolised blessings of happiness, good health, longevity and family togetherness, reflecting the multicultural spirit and community harmony of Kuching South.
