KUCHING: Bung Bratak has entered a new phase of development with the arrival of a stable electricity supply, a move expected to strengthen the hilltop destination’s growing role in Sarawak’s eco and cultural tourism sector.

Bung Bratak founder Datuk Peter Minos said the electricity connection provided through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) was announced during the recent Bung Bratak Day celebration on May 1.

Since opening in 2017, the historical and eco-tourism centre in Bau has relied on two generators to support daily operations and overnight activities.

Minos said the generators were not only costly to maintain but could also become unreliable during major functions.

“With electricity now available, life for overnight tourists and visitors will be much easier and more comfortable,” he said.

He added that organisers of seminars, conferences and team-building programmes would also benefit from more reliable facilities without worrying about power interruptions.

Describing the development as one of Bung Bratak’s biggest milestones so far, Minos expressed gratitude to the federal Ministry of Tourism, the late former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for supporting the project over the years.

He also acknowledged contributions from the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, SALCRA, local elected representatives and other stakeholders involved in developing the centre.

He said the achievement reflected the strength of collective effort in building community-driven tourism initiatives, particularly for the Bidayuh community in the Jagoi-Bratak area.
