Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa opened up about the realities of serving as an elected representative, the common requests he receives from constituents, and his favourite local food spots in Engkilili.
ST: What is the strangest complaint you have ever received from your constituents?
Actually, they are not complaints but requests. Most are related to water supply, roads, education and welfare assistance. As an elected representative, I try my best to act as a bridge between the people and the government to ensure their requests are heard, fulfilled and implemented. We listen and never block anyone’s application or request, especially involving issues like water and road infrastructure.
Are there any local places in Engkilili that you would recommend?
There are many interesting places. I usually eat at roadside stalls around Simpang Sedarat and Simpang Lobang. The BBQ there is very authentic kampung-style BBQ. Tourists also enjoy visiting the longhouses and Batu Nabau, which is one of the more popular attractions in Engkilili.
What do people often misunderstand about the life of an elected representative?
People often think elected representative spend most of their time socialising everywhere, but in reality, we carry a lot of responsibilities. We try to help wherever we can. If we are able to help, we will do so. If we cannot, we explain honestly. As one, I have always tried my best to serve as the people’s bridge to the government in realising and implementing their needs.
What is the hardest part about being an elected representative?
If you ask me about the easy part of being one, maybe I can give two or three answers. But if you ask me about the difficulties, I can give 1,001 answers. What matters most is that the people continue to work together in unity and support the leadership of the Premier for the stability and development of Sarawak. As a representative of the people, I will continue bringing the rakyat together in fully supporting the Premier’s leadership so Sarawak can continue progressing in every aspect.
