LAHAD DATU: An attempt to smuggle in 24,176 units of cosmetic products without valid permits from the Philippines, estimated to be worth RM360,986, was foiled after the Marine Police Force (PPM) detained a ferry in a special operation in waters here yesterday.

Sabah PPM Region 4 commander ACP Ahmad Amri Abd Rahman said in the 8.05 am incident, 70 stacks of boxes containing various cosmetic products were found on the ferry, which was travelling from Bongao in Tawi-Tawi, the Philippines, to Lahad Datu.

“Following an intelligence information, Sabah PPM Region 4 together with Lahad Datu Police Special Branch detained the ferry and further inspection found that all the goods did not have valid permits from the Philippine Bureau of Customs,” he said in a statement here today.

He said all seized items were later taken to the PPM Lahad Datu operations base for documentation and the case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.

According to him, the success was following their intensified operations to curb smuggling activities that affect national security, including the country’s economy. – BERNAMA
