THE state government has intensified efforts to combat vandalism involving telecommunications infrastructure, including strengthening cooperation with local communities and enforcement agencies.

Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication I (Telecommunication), Datuk Liwan Lagang, said an Anti-Vandalism Committee involving various departments and agencies has been established to coordinate strategies aimed at curbing such activities across the state.

He said among the measures implemented are anti-vandalism awareness programmes to encourage the public to report suspicious activities involving utility and telecommunications facilities.

“We are also taking legal action against individuals involved in vandalism of utility facilities and telecommunications infrastructure,” he said when responding to a question from Tupong assemblyman, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 15).

Liwan said the integrated “Ops Lusuh” operations are also conducted periodically at scrap metal premises together with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), enforcement agencies, as well as utility and telecommunications agencies throughout Sarawak.

He also revealed that losses caused by vandalism involving telecommunications infrastructure in Sarawak have reached RM11.34 million in 2025.

On public reporting channels, Liwan advised members of the public to first lodge police reports with PDRM if they witness or encounter vandalism cases.

He said complaints can also be submitted directly to relevant service providers through customer service hotlines, mobile applications or official company websites.“Official complaints may also be submitted to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) through its online complaint portal or toll-free hotline. The public can also channel complaints through the Sarawak service portal at talikhidmat.sarawak.gov.my or by contacting 082-555999 for further action,” he added.
