KUCHING: Kuching Port Authority (KPA) has recorded its best-ever operational and financial performance in 2025, handling 325,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container traffic and 10.42 million tonnes of cargo — the highest throughput in the port authority’s 65-year history.
KPA chairman Azizul Annuar Adenan said the landmark achievement also translated into a strong financial performance, with the authority posting a net surplus of about RM16 million for the fiscal year.
“2025 was a landmark, record-breaking year for the Kuching Port Authority. These milestones are a direct reflection of the hard work, resilience and daily commitment of every single KPA employee,” he said at the KPA’s 65th Anniversary dinner at a hotel here last night (May 15).
He noted that the record cargo and container volumes underscored the growing role of KPA as a key trade and logistics gateway for Sarawak and the wider region.
Despite the achievements, Azizul said KPA was already moving aggressively to expand its infrastructure capacity to meet rising future demand and accommodate larger vessels.
Among the major projects in the pipeline is the construction of a new container yard at the Senari Terminal, which is expected to increase annual handling capacity by an additional 200,000 TEUs.
KPA is also set to strengthen its position as a regional automotive logistics hub with the expansion of its vehicle yard by another 1,000 vehicles by the end of this year. The project will raise the terminal’s total holding capacity to 3,500 vehicles.
“This will firmly position the Senari Terminal as a leading regional hub for automotive logistics and car distribution,” Azizul said.
In addition, the authority is undertaking a major wharf expansion project involving a 250-metre extension at the Senari Terminal. The development comprises a 220-metre linear wharf extension and a 30-metre mooring dolphin, with a projected cost ceiling of RM150 million.
Azizul also said in tandem with physical infrastructure, digital transformation remains at the core of the port strategy.
“KPA has long been a pioneer in this arena, becoming the first port authority in Malaysia to receive the prestigious MS ISO 9002 certification for its container handling management systems back in 1998.
“We continue to upgrade our digital frameworks to reduce manual workflows, minimize vessel turnaround times, and enhance data accuracy.
“A crowning achievement in this effort was the full implementation of the Malaysia Maritime Single Window (MMSW) system on December 5, 2025. Developed in coordination with the Marine Department, this unified digital platform serves as a centralized interface for ship arrival and departure clearances, significantly streamlining port logistics,” said Azizul.
