MUKAH: A local man’s alleged side business selling illegal lottery tickets was cut short after police raided an unnumbered shop in Sungai Liuk, Balingian yesterday (May 16).

The 23-year-old was arrested during a raid conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at around 4.30 pm.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said inspections uncovered a smartphone containing an application believed to have been used for illegal lottery betting transactions.

“Police also seized a printer, a sheet of paper with four-digit lottery numbers, a pen, a calculator and RM78 in cash suspected to be linked to the gambling activities.

“The suspect and all seized items were taken to the district police headquarters for further investigation,” he said.

Background checks also found that the suspect has three prior records involving criminal and drug-related offences.

However, Rizal said a urine screening conducted on him tested negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine up to RM200,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, upon conviction.

Items seized during the raid believed to be linked to illegal lottery activities.
